"Holistic" means dealing with wholes and complete systems rather than with parts. As far as your health is concerned, it means that all parts of yourself (the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) need to be attended to or balanced in order to cure any health problem that may arise.
For example, you may experience a physical symptom (a pain, headache, sore throat, cold, fatigue, weight gain, etc.), and you immediately do something to remedy that physical symptom (take medication, take a nap, go on a diet, etc.). The symptom may disappear, and you think you're "cured". Most people stop there and think no more about it until the same symptom or another, worse, symptom appears. Then, more meds are used to alleviate that symptom and so on and so forth. One endless cycle begins and continues until the symptoms make it necessary to seek professional help or you're lucky enough to come across a friend like me. In Western cultures, the former usually results in even more, stronger meds, surgery or some other method used to get rid of the physical symptom. And the cycle continues...only on a much larger and more expensive scale. By the time most people and medical professionals wonder what's causing the symptom in the first place, an even bigger problem is discovered, sometimes with dire circumstances.
When I talk about the “Holistic Approach” what do I really mean? Basically, I am talking about looking at your body, your health, and your life as a whole, instead of compartmentalizing and thinking that they are separate. They are all very much connected.
The Holistic Health is also all about getting to the root cause of a health issue, not just putting a band-aid on the situation by treating the symptoms. I mean, really getting to the root cause of whatever is troubling you, whether it be a skin condition, a digestive disorder a sore throat etc. I investigate every angle of my client’s health to determine what is the root cause of the problem.
Now, I’m not going to lie to you, the Holistic Approach has it’s downside. It takes longer to work, and you don’t get that instant gratification that we are used to getting from prescriptions. But it does work. And the effects are longer lasting because you are getting to the root cause and correcting the problem, not just temporality covering up the problem. AND it will improve your overall health – not just the initial problem you were trying to fix.
Another aspect of the Holistic Approach is giving your body what it needs to heal itself, and one of those things is de-stressing your body. If you don’t take time to de-stress, you can NOT heal your body.
Sometimes we forget that the body IS a self-healing organism, and given the right circumstances it can heal itself, but it can’t heal itself if it can’t rest so that it can do its repair work.
The Holistic Approach is not the only way to get better, but it is the best way for your whole-body health and to achieve long-term results.
